Two stunning examples of the highest quality ammolite set in sterling silver pendant with 2 blue sapphires and sterling ring.
Ammolite is produced from ammonite - the remnants of sea creatures that went extinct ~80 million years ago. Rough ammonite is found fossilized onto it's host shale rock, and is a thin and rather delicate material.
While ammonites are found in various spots worldwide, the most brilliantly coloured examples come from a small area in Alberta, Canada. To transform the ammonite into it's gem form, chemical bonding agents under vacuum pressure are applied, followed by a graduated series of polishes to create a mirror finish. Ammolite was officially recognized as a gem by the World Coloured Gemstone Stone Commission in 1981, and is recognized as Alberta's official gemstone.
